Welsh practices praised by inspectors

NewsPractices in Wales have won backing from inspectors for their treatment of patients.

The Welsh health inspectorate says that every practice it visited treated patients with “dignity, respect, compassion and kindness.”

The findings come from a report on visits to 27 practices in the last financial year.

The inspectors say many practices now offer access to other health professionals such as advanced nurse practitioners.

Health Inspectorate Wales chief executive Dr Kate Chamberlain said practices needed to do more to manage the needs of at risk adults.

She added: “It has become clear from this work that patients across Wales are satisfied with and appreciate the dignified, effective care that they receive from their GPs and GP practice staff.

“It was disappointing as part of this work to see the inconsistency in the information provided to GPs when patients are discharged from hospital. We saw instances of very poor quality and in some cases a total absence of discharge information being provided.

“This presents a considerable risk for patients and creates significant additional work for GPs and staff in primary care.”

Dr Charlotte Jones, who chairs the British Medical Association’s Welsh GP committee, said the findings were “no surprise” but also highlighted the challenges faced by practices such as doctor vacancies and increased demand for services.

She added: “It is a concern that the report highlighted the inconsistency in information provided to GPs when patients are discharged from hospital. This not only increases the already stretched workload of GPs but also hinders the provision of quality care.”
