In the webinar, the Orchid Project will cover what FGM/C is, how to identify it, and its impacts. It will also be an opportunity to gain insights from doctors themselves who specialise in responding and supporting cases of FGM/C.
The safeguarding roles and responsibilities surrounding this practice can seem overwhelming, so it’s hoped that this webinar will provide support and guidance for medical professionals in this aspect of their roles.
FGM/C is not just a health issue but a violation of human rights and a form of gender-based violence affecting approximately 4.3 million women and girls each year globally. FGM/C was made illegal in the UK in 1985 but it is thought that more than 100,000 live with the effects in the country today. Collaboration and education are key in ending this harmful practice and ensuring the well-being of affected individuals. This webinar will provide a space for education, learning and questions about the role of medical and healthcare professionals in supporting survivors of FGM/C.
The panel will consist of a range of experts including an FGM/C researcher at Orchid Project, an NHS doctor and GP representative at Malaysian Doctors for Women and Girls and a Military Doctor and co-founder of the FGM Education Project.
