NEWS: Practice banned from surgical procedures

Two London practices were heavily criticised by inspectors yesterday and rated as inadequate.

The Bermondsey Spa Medical Centre was unable to show that staff had the “skills, knowledge and experience” to carry out their roles, inspectors said.

The medical centre, with three partners, was ordered to suspend surgical procedures last July for a period of three months and this was extended in October, the report reveals.

The Care Quality Commission said that patients complained about poor access to services while the practice failed to act on the feedback from patient surveys.

The centre’s leading partner, Dr Shabhir Bhatti, is due to retire later this month.

Antony Hall, the CQC’s head of inspection for primary medical services in London, said: “Dr Shabir Bhatti’s practice will remain in special measures. The service will be kept under review and if needed could be escalated to further enforcement action.

“Patients registered with practices being placed into special measures should be aware that support is offered by NHS England and the Royal College of GPs to ensure that there are no immediate risks to patient safety whilst improvements are being made.”

The second practice criticised by inspectors was the Westway Surgery in Hammersmith and Fulham, providing care for 3,400 patients.

Inspectors said its leaders could not show they had the capacity and skills to deliver high quality and sustainable care. There was no evidence, they said, of processes for learning, continuous improvement and innovation.

The CQC said it had given the practice six months to make improvements – or else it would consider cancelling its registration.
