GPs back collaboration – but not loss of independence

NewsMany GPs are keen for improved collaboration with other practices and professionals – but do not want to sacrifice their independent practice, according to the findings of a major survey of the profession.

The British Medical Association, which conducted the survey of 5,000 doctors, said it showed strong support for increased collaborative working.

Ambitious plans to create large new practice groups have begun to meet local resistance in some areas.

The survey found that 50% of GPs want to keep the current model of independent practices – but want resources for improved collaboration.

Some 32% backed the development of collaborative alliances using multi-professional staff to manage care outside of hospitals.

Doctors taking part in the survey indicated several advantages from improved collaboration. This included cutting the bureaucracy of running a practice – backed by 39% – and cutting workload – backed by 37%.

Some 32% said practices could achieve extra security and sustainability in a larger organisation.

BMA GP committee chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul promised new advice for practices in the New Year on the topic.

He said: “These results demonstrate a very strong desire from GPs to work collaboratively in a range of flexible settings. There is support for the continuation of the current independent contractor model if GPs are given the resources and support they need to deliver an effective service to patients.

“Alongside this though, GPs also want to have closer ties with other practices and also with multi-professional healthcare staff.

“The benefits of developing these models is clear, especially as nearly four in ten GPs believe that collaborative alliances are key to reducing bureaucracy and unnecessary workload.”
