Welsh practices at risk – BMA

NewsDozens of practices in Wales are at risk, according to a new analysis by the British Medical Association.

Over two years five practices have closed and 18 have handed back their contracts.

But a further 29 have sought funding help from health boards – and another 29 are planning to do so, the BMA found.

The growing crisis led the BMA to issue guidance to GPs on what to do when considering withdrawing from their contract.

The news came shortly after the country announced an increase in the number of GP trainees, offering hope that doctor vacancies could be filled.

The BMA says that handing back a contract should be the “last resort” and has urged practices considering the move to seek support from their local medical committee.

BMA Welsh GP committee chair Dr Charlotte Jones said: “The number of practices “at risk” in Wales changes on a regular basis, but it is clear to see the number has increased. This is of grave concern and reflects the pressures facing practices, which vary considerably across Wales.

“GPC Wales encourages struggling practices to seek help early on by contacting their local medical committees for support and professional advice, as well as completing the sustainability assessment framework to allow practices to take a comprehensive view of their current position.”

She added: “The amount of help offered by health boards to struggling practices differs across Wales, with some receiving excellent support, enabling their situation to be turned around. Sadly, other practices report a very different response.”
