NEWS: London gets super-GP organisation

GPs have voted to create England’s single largest clinical commissioning group, serving a population of more than two million.

The new CCG ranges from Hackney to Havering, takes in seven CCGs and gained overwhelming support from local practices, the Health Service Journal reported. It will now share the borders with an integrated care system that is being developed for this part of London. However local districts will retain integrated care partnerships, forming groups of practices within the care system, the journal reported.

According to the guiding principles adopted for the new CCG, it will have a focus on outcomes “in terms of quality of care, performance, safety, reducing health inequalities and experience for both patients and staff.”

London has five health systems and four have now voted to form giant CCGs. In the north west of the city, merger has been rejected by local GPs. Setting out their plans in August, the North East London CCGs said they would maintain an 80:20 principle, ensuring that most health and care delivery was in local boroughs and places, with local partnerships deciding the best use of resources.

It stated: “One CCG for NEL would continue to be a clinically led organisation with strong clinical leadership and a GP voice at all levels. There would be one NEL CCG governing body and an ICS partnership board at a NEL level. Most decisions will take place through local governance arrangements. Each place will be represented by a GP chair on the NEL governing body and ICS partnership board. GP members’ forums and representative bodies will be essential to making this successful, working with the GP chair to make decisions about health and care in our local communities.”
