NEWS: Practices sign up for primary care deal

Barely 100 practices have opted out of the new primary care network contract, the government has announced.

Two weeks ago it was reported that 25% of the 6,700 practices in England had not signed the contract before a 1 June deadline. Practices were alarmed at requirements that care homes get regular visits – even when it was specified this need not be undertaken by a regular GP.

NHS England said that, following the pandemic, all care homes now have clinical leads and almost all practices have weekly “check ins” with care homes. 98% of practices have signed the contract. It says the deal will mean primary care receiving an extra £1.4 billion in investment within four years – leading to the creation of an extra 26,000 front-line staff.

Practices will get full reimbursement for the salaries of staff such as clinical pharmacists, physiotherapists, physician associates and dieticians, it said. Many staff will be employed through 1,250 primary care networks.

Medical director for primary care Dr Nikki Kanani said: “The determination from everyone to put general practice on a stronger footing so that it can deliver the services patients need has been extremely encouraging – we benefited from extensive engagement with the proposals on this and I’m pleased that we can now move forward together and deliver on our shared goals to provide extra support for practices that need it, large or small.”

Ruth Rankine, who is director of the NHS Confederation primary care network, said: “PCNs are absolutely key to delivering the ambitions of the NHS Long Term Plan, ensuring that patients, irrespective of where they live, get access to the same services whilst giving PCNs the flexibility to respond to the needs of their local population.”
