Some £100 million is to be spent in Wales on “transforming” health and social services, it has been announced.
The Welsh government promised “bold and innovative” ways of delivering services.
Its new fund will focus on primary care and the development of care close to homes.
Welsh health secretary Vaughan Gething said: “This additional funding takes our investment in the NHS beyond what the Nuffield Trust and Health Foundation said was needed to maintain core health services.
“It will not be used to offset pressures in the system that should be managed through increases in efficiency from the additional funding already allocated.”
Royal College of GPs Welsh chair Dr Rebecca Payne said: “Supporting general practice is key to this and we hope specific investment in this area will be forthcoming. General practice’s share of NHS spend has been decreasing and this is an opportunity to begin to redress this.
“An increase in GP training places to 200 a year would boost the workforce and help ensure patients get convenient appointments.
