The Care Quality Commission has suspended a general practice in Brent, London, until November for failures in managing controlled drugs.
Dr Abubakh Shaikh’s Peel Precinct Surgery has been suspended following an inspection in May 2019, which found a series of unsafe practices.
Inspectors found that the practice did not properly monitor patients on controlled drugs, identifying 16 patients who were prescribed tramadol. Of these 16 patients, records of three patients were reviewed and one example of significantly unsafe care of a patient was recorded.
CQC says the practice did not have appropriate arrangements in place to manage and monitor the prescribing of antibiotics – while the lead GP did not prescribe first choice antibiotics for uncomplicated lower urinary-tract infections in line with national guidance.
The practice did not have effective systems and processes in place to safeguard patients from abuse and patients were at significant risk of harm as a result of poor record keeping.
Antony Hall, head of inspection for primary medical services in London, said: “As a result of these and other concerns identified as part of our inspection process, CQC has concluded suspension of the provider’s registration is necessary until they have improved the level of care provided for patients and ensured patients are protected from the risk of harm. The provider did originally appeal against CQC’s decision to suspend the practice but has since withdrawn that appeal.”
During CQC’s inspection the practice was rated Inadequate overall. It was rated Inadequate for being safe, effective, responsive and well-led. It was rated Good for being caring. Peel Practice patients are now being seen at Kilburn Park Medical Centre.
