Launching the Gender Identity Toolkit for General Practice

Over 250 people joined us this week for the Gender Identity Toolkit Launch Webinar. The toolkit is a project the IGPM have been working on with Indigo, the LGBT Foundation Pride in Practice, and Practice Index for some time. This work has resulted in a document that we think is highly relevant to practices, and will ensure that we are consistently looking after our NHS patients who are in the process of transitioning.

We were delighted to be joined on the webinar by Dr Luke Wookey and Hannah Wilk from Indigo, as well as Aimee Linfield from Pride in Practice, who have been an integral part of creating the toolkit. During the webinar they explained about the difficulties of changing gender markers in medical records, how easy it is to change demographic details, and also how important it is to have open and honest conversations with our patients who are transitioning or who have already transitioned.

I hope everyone gained as much gained first-hand knowledge as I feel I did. The key points I’ll be remembering from the session are that we should talk to our patients, apologise if we get the pronouns wrong, and ensure we are closely and safely following their wishes.

We received lots of questions during the session which unfortunately we didn’t have time to answer. However, we have collated them all and it’s likely that we’ll have another webinar to address them.

If you weren’t able to attend this week’s webinar, and you can watch the recording below. You can also download the toolkit here.

I am proud that Practice managers have seen a gap in our knowledge and skills and so we have gone out, found the information and compiled it in a toolkit. Never has a PM organisation done this before! We’ve produced something for our members and colleagues that’s useful, relevant, easy to understand, and very much needed.

The IGPM can only achieve great things with our members’ support. There are now 1,000 of you across the UK who know that PMs need to be represented, accredited and have a voice. We also need to write much needed and relevant policies and protocols when they don’t exist. So, if you’re a member and have some ideas for us, then do please comment below.

And if you’re not a member yet – why not?
