Institute of General Practice Management – Survey of managers in general practice 2021

Following on from a difficult 2020 and the start of the pandemic, 2021 has been a highly pressured and volatile year in primary care. With PMs at the forefront of the ever changing general practice landscape, and with increasing demands on time, resources and sanity, the Institute of General Practice Management felt it was important to hear first hand from management professionals on the challenges they have faced, and are facing.

The inaugural IGPM survey was launched in October via IGPM regional reps on the General Practice Managers UK Facebook page and via Practice Index and attracted 1620 responses.

Some of the key findings include:

  • 92% of respondents feel that there are insufficient measures in place within the wider NHS system to protect them and their teams from abuse
  • 85% of respondents don’t feel that practice managers have had a voice in the changes that have been implemented in general practice
  • Over half of those who responded feel felt that their commissioning body does not support general practice
  • 52% of respondents don’t feel able to take time off for annual leave
  • 1⁄4 of respondents said that they are more than 50% likely to leave practice management in the next 12 months

It is fantastic that over 30% of respondents are already members of the IGPM. If you would like to become an IGPM member, simply click here for more details.
