Practice Manager Pastimes – Baking?

Practice Manager Pastimes - Baking? With retired GP practice manager Nancy Birtwhistle (@nancybbakes) already tipped for success in the new series of Great British Bake Off, we thought it was time we talked about practice managers and what they do, or could do, with their free time.

Nancy took up baking when she retired from running Central Surgery in Barton-Upon-Humber seven years ago, and is described as being ‘full of energy and ideas.’ No doubt Nancy’s long GP surgery experience – the pressure, the multitasking and the planning – will stand her in good stead in a competition where many fail for losing their head under pressure. Needless to say, we’re rooting for her all the way!

So as baking becomes ever popular as a therapeutic pastime all the family will benefit from, let’s turn our attention to other hobbies that may complement the frenetic lifestyle of the busy practice manager. Here are our top three, aside from baking of course…

Gardening

A nurturing activity, but where the patients don’t complain! Jokes aside, gardening is a great way to get out in the fresh air and reconnected with nature. You spend your day hyper-connected to people, software and systems, and may struggle to find quiet time in your home life as a result. Grab your trowel and get potting something, and leave your mobile indoors.

Art

You needn’t be arty already in order to join an art class – that’s the whole point of learning! Whether you spend an hour a week sketching still life compositions or a life model, or put aside Saturday afternoons for landscape, canvas and oils, the concentration needed for art is all-consuming and deeply meditative without being exhausting.

Writing

It’s not for everyone, but blogging is a fun way to record daily or weekly happenings that can also be hugely therapeutic. Just remember to keep your anecdotes professional if you decide to make your blog public, though never shy away from some well-needed humour if you decide to blog about your life at work. And if you do start a practice manager’s blog, be sure to tell us about it!

It’s no coincidence that some of the most suitable pastimes for practice managers are all creative pursuits of some sort. For people who spend their days caring for others and overseeing logistics with painstaking attention to detail, doing something for yourself – something you’re allowed to experiment with and make mistakes on – is hugely rewarding. What do you do in your spare time to unwind for the pressures of the working day? Let us know in the comments box below!
