Welsh practices press for cash

NewsPractices in Wales stepped up pressure for legislators today to put funding into primary care.

The move follows pledges in Scotland to ensure primary care gets 11% of the NHS budget.

The Welsh government is due to release its draft budget today.

The Royal College of GPs yesterday set out its proposals for using extra cash to “transform” general practice.

It says that Wales should get an extra £297 million for practices by 2021. This would recruit an extra 500 doctors together with nurses and paramedics.

College Welsh chair Dr Rebecca Payne said: “There is an urgent need to invest, to embark on an ambitious recruitment campaign, including increasing the places for GP training here in Wales to 200 per year, and addressing urgently the number of professionals in the wider primary care team, such as nurses and paramedics.

“To ensure we are able to continue to provide the very best service for our patients, I urge the Welsh government to grasp this opportunity to secure a strong, safe and sustainable future for general practice in Wales.”

* A drive in Scotland to recruit trainee GPs has fallen well short of its targets, it emerged today.

Just 37 out of 100 posts have been filled in spite of bursaries of £20,000 being offered to work in rural locations. Some 15 doctors have taken the bursaries.

The news emerged after the Scottish government promised to increase spending on primary care by £500 million a year.
