Having to talk about symptoms with receptionists is a major barrier to people seeking investigation of possible cancer, it was claimed today.
Fear of the receptionist was almost as great an obstacle as the difficulty of getting an appointment, researchers found.
The findings come from an analysis of a survey of cancer awareness among 2,000 people.
Some 40% cited talking to the receptionist as a problem while 42% said getting an appointment was a problem.
35% of those in the survey said that not wanting to make a fuss was another reason.
The findings are reported today in the Journal of Public Health.
Dr Richard Roope, from Cancer Research UK, which conducted the research, said: “We need to ensure that patients are able to get appointments at a convenient time, can book an appointment to see a particular doctor and aren’t put off coming to see them in the first place. This may mean more emphasis on training front desk staff including receptionists to deal more sensitively with patients.
“And it’s vital that the recent investment from Government is used to attract talented people into the medical profession, which will boost the GP shortage. We need more doctors to cope with the growing number of people walking through their doors.”
The Royal College of GPs said receptionists have a key role in ensuring the “smooth running” of the practice.
College chair Dr Maureen Baker said: “However, it is important to remember that they are not healthcare professionals, and are not in a position to make decisions about our patients’ health.
“The GP Forward View, announced by NHS England earlier this year, contains a key pledge to roll-out nationwide training for the whole practice team, including receptionists and clerical staff.
“This could have a significant impact on the progressing role of GP receptionists and the overall patient experience, and the College will be following developments closely.”

So Receptionists as gatekeepers seems to be this week’s NHS media buzz. Following the publication of this report, there was a discussion on the topic on this morning’s Today Programme on Radio 4.
In it, Dr Dan Roper, chair of the Hull CCG, mentioned that government funding is available for practices to train Medical Receptionists. I had a look but couldn’t find this online, so emailed him.
Dr Roper’s swift reply was that the funding is coming through the GP 5 year forward view – so make sure your local
LMC and CCG keep you up to speed with it!
Thank you Dr Roper!
